There are increasing number of Employers administering psychological screening tools to evaluate a job candidates abilities and personality.

Psychological testing is used by many employers to help determine the abilities of people prior to hiring as well as the aptitude of current employees. The psychological tests show which persons are better suited for particular positions and who has the best chance at being the best employee. This can be particularly relevant information when employers are looking to promote.

Abilities and Aptitude

Psychological assessment of abilities and aptitude helps to predict whether a worker will be able to handle complex tasks as well as his ability to communicate with others. In addition it tests how well he will be able to handle training and learn new tasks. These tests are often used in combination with a few other tests in order to get a full picture of the person.

Situational Judgment

Honesty is a very important part of business. It helps to build trust between employees as well as between management and the general employee pool. Situational judgment measures a person’s past success and poses situational questions to determine her value system. The questions are not designed to offer simple solutions or answers but rather test the employee and her ability to think through complex situations.

Personality and Behavior

Personality assessment predicts group dynamics and a person’s ability to work with others. Employers use these tests to help determine who will make a good leader and who works best as a part of a team. These tests help employers know who is good at self-motivating and can manage large projects without supervision. The other side allows employers to determine who requires a more structured environment. This information can be used during the hiring process or in deciding the placement of employees.

General Reasoning

General reasoning assessments work similarly to situational judgment. Instead of being given situations to work out, problems are presented to the subjects in order to determine the capability of the person to reason and reach a solution. Often times, partial information is presented and the employee or prospective employee must fill in the blanks by drawing sound conclusions from the information given. This type of skill set is important for many jobs such as police officers, nurses, fire fighters and investment bankers. The test allows the employer to know what the employee is capable of when it comes to thinking for himself. These reasoning skills allow workers to not only solve problems but in some cases save lives as people are very rarely given all pertinent information in the real world, reasoning is used to solve the puzzle.
